HENDERSON, Ky.- On Saturday, October 11 workers at Accuride Corp. celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Henderson truck wheel plant at one of the high points in the facility’s history.
Certainly expectations were high when Firestone Steel Products Co. — the wheel-making division of the famous tire company — began production in its new $13 million plant in mid-October 1974. Then-plant manager Paul Belanger reported that the first seven hourly employees had just been hired; within a few months, that was expected to swell to 200 to 250.
Along with newly recruited heavy industries Eaton Axle (now Dana Corp.) and Anaconda (now Century) Aluminum, Firestone Steel transformed the industrial and employment landscape of Henderson County in the 1970s, helping make this one of the more prosperous counties in Kentucky.
